Is Seaweed the New Superfood? Science Says Yes

Food scientists say that consuming seaweed on the regular can actually be beneficial for your cardiovascular system

Forget seaweed salad...does this mean ice cream is good for our heart?

Want to know how to improve your cardiovascular health? Scientists say the trick is adding seaweed to your processed food intake, for instance, replacing five percent of the pizza dough flour with seaweed. Seaweed contains many important substances like beneficial proteins, antioxidants, minerals, dietary fiber and polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to Science Daily. Seaweed also has umami, the fifth taste that promotes satiety.

Southern Denmark professor of biophysics, Ole G. Mouritsen, and his co-workers have concluded that seaweed is the new superfood and should be an important part of the modern diet.

"It is difficult to determine how much seaweed a person should consume to benefit from its good qualities. 5-10 grams of dried seaweed per day is my estimate," says Professor Mouritsen, a co-author of the study.

Granulated seaweed can improve the taste and healthfulness of fast food and junk food, especially carb-based foods like pizza or burgers.

"We know that many people have difficulty distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy food,” the authors write. “By adding seaweed to processed foods we can make food healthier. In many cases we also get tastier food, and it may also help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases."

10 Superfoods That Live Up To The Hype

OK, so technically there’s no such thing as a superfood. Sure, there are foods that pack a nutritional punch. A whole long list of foods that you should probably (definitely) be eating more of on a daily basis. But is there a food that’s going to change your life? Add years to your life expectancy? Turn you into a supermodel who can dead lift 400 pounds? Eh … not so much.

The health industry likes to throw around the word “superfood” whenever new science and research highlights more benefits of foods we’ve been eating forever. But, there are definitely some foods that warrant the title, exaggerated as it may be. These superfoods aren’t going to fix all your problems, but as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, they are a big piece of the optimal health and disease prevention puzzle.
